Phone conversation with
Walter today.
On my first attempt I ended up speaking with his wife. Mrs Sturgis is as nice to talk to as he is. She told me that she could not bother him because he was out welding on equipment in the shop, and that the creative process could be seriously impeded if she interrupted.

When Walt called me back we had a nice conversation. He told me; 'We have had more calls this year prior to July than ever before. I think that may be attributable to OUTDOORSMAN.'
All of Walts clients have told me the same thing - that he is as honest as the day is long and you will not be dissappointed with the hunt or with Mr Sturgis' style. They take good care of you from pickup to dropoff and are very concerned about your happiness and well being. What more could you ask for in a guide or a host?

I cannot say enough about the Pine Meadows Elk Ranch. The hunting is excellent, but I am sold on the overall experience.
Pine Meadows offers an array of possibilites to choose from. The accommodations are excellent. The Elk stock was exactly what I would expect in a ranch hunt, good healthy animals with a broad variety.
The after-kill process was very orderly with all of the convienences and necessary facilites to clean and transport the Elk.
Walter Sturgis and his wife were very hospitable and made the hunt quite memorable. I would recommend this hunt to anyone, in fact, I have already booked my hunt next year.

Comfort;
Walt picked up at the airport served as a personal chaufer. Due to a plan change in camp, Walt paid for a stay in a local bed and breakfast.

Animals;
Numerous options from cows to spikes to branch antlered bulls. Hunting was very easy and very enjoyable. Hunted the ranch alone based on request and personal preference.
Once the animal was down Walt came in with an ATV, picked up the animal, and took care of everything from dressing to caping and transportation to a local butcher.

Communication;
Excellent prehunt communication
Very upfront- hunt was sold appropriately with no false expectations.

If someone is looking for a nice ranch-hunting experience this is the one. Couldn't have been friendlier, kinder, or more accommodating. Even the local butcher shop was nice. They arranged for shipping to a home post office.

From a blue-collar guy - who saves up for these trips - this is an excellent experience.

Will do it as a bow hunt next time.

Nice huntable ranch – heavily wooded – hard to hunt the animals. Camp was in nice location, very secluded, miles
of dirt roads to get there. Stayed in Mountain home at the hotel and drove out every day. Travel time from mountain
home was 1hr - almost all dirt roads.
Very Hospitable – nice barn and hoist to clean the animals. They bring the
animal in for you and you clean it. Walter always got right in to help. Saw a number of elk, usually in groups of 2-3 or 10-15. Used rifle. Good communication and pre-hunt confirmation. Had some friends that had hunted with Walter and they
recommended him. Will hunt with them next year. Hunted 3 years in a row.
Very good in the field communication
Walter is great about following up and making certain that you had a good
experience. Excellent hunt for a busy
person that cannot afford to take a full week off (with typical outfitter
uncertainties) - but, would like to enjoy a nice elk hunt and shoot a big bull.

You will love Walt Sturgis and you will be totally impressed with his guaranteed elk hunting outfit. Walt is one of the most genuine gentlemen I have ever met. I could not believe the kind of detail he has put into everything from the perfectly stacked cord-wood at the outfitter tent, to the gates on his ranch, to the retrieval process, to the ultra sanitized caping and elk processing barn. You will not be disappointed. Prairie Idaho is a very unique place and only 45 minutes out of Boise or Mountain Home Idaho. Very easy to find and very fun to hunt. It is a high fence operation but with the density of the pines and quakies and the perfect little meadows you would never know you were on a high fence elk ranch. As long as Walt is running this place you will get more than your money's worth. Enjoy hunting elk with Walt Sturgis at Pine Meadows Elk Ranch.

Hunted just outside the ranch. Shot a nice 300+ 6X6 and cost $30 or whatever the resident price elk tag costs fall 08. Guess if you have the $$$ and want to kill a fenced in bull.... enjoy looking at that one on your wall

So, the guaranteed elk hunting debate continues: Which is more ethical; 1) Sneak around the perimeter of a high fence elk ranch and use the elk from the hard working elk ranchers property as your personal decoys - (justifying your 'I don't hunt high fence or guaranteed elk ranches' mentality). Or, 2) Pay the fees and enjoy a quality hunt with a guaranteed elk hunting outfitter? One of these hunting trips will guarantee the elk hunter a clear conscience.

for the serious hunter i would not recomend this place. the elk are enclosed in a fensed area and you can walk right up to them. they are raised from young and are like pets. there is nothing professional about the set-up.
