Fish biologists are always looking for ways to better understand the dynamics of Oregon’s migratory fish. This quest for knowledge can lead to all kinds of innovative approaches to information gathering.

The department has set up a time-lapse video camera behind a thick Plexiglas window in the bottom of a new concrete fishway at Upper Bennett Dam, a low-head dam on the N. Santiam owned and operated by the City of Salem. The camera relays its signal to a computer housed in a remote control center, where special software tabulates the number and types of fish that swim through the fishway.

I have seen the fish counting done both ways. The new way with computer software and the old fashioned counter which would be some guy sitting behind that plexiglass with a clicker trying to count as many fish as he could in a period of time, and then they would fomulate that number to get a guesstimate on how many fish passed through in a given period. The new way is much more accurate and will benefit the river management teams.
