Best Montana Whitetail areas for DIY non-resident hunters

by OUTDOORSMAN on Wed Nov 04, 2009 02:27 PM

What are some of the best areas in Montana for non resident hunters to apply for Whitetail deer hunts?

We would like a Do-it-yourself, or semi-guided, hunt in fall 2010 with a moderate chance of seeing and shooting a decent Montana Whitetail. Any additional information on local towns or camp areas would be much appreciated.

Please reply here as the reply and notification will be sent to my email in-box.
Thanks

Just got back from Montana (Bitterroot Valley) and did not see any Whitetail bucks. Saw 2 (count em) Mule Deer bucks. Saw quite a few does but the bucks must have been hiding. Also saw not one bull and all the cows we saw were on private land. I don't know if it was the weather (windy and clear), the full moon or the wolves but game was scarce.

Jack,
Sorry to hear that you didn't have any luck in Montana. We are still looking for a good do-it-yourself whitetail area.

The wolves are certainly becoming a bigger problem than any of the reasonable parties involved anticipated. We hunted Southeast Idaho for elk this fall. We were on private land with absolutely no pressure from other hunters and we saw nothing. In years past it has been extremely productive. We have killed bulls every year that we have drawn the area, and, every year we have been inundated with animals, with the exception of this year. When we started talking to landowners and other hunters we found out that there were wolves sighted north of us and also one of the hunters we talked to confirmed that they listened to a pack howling throughout the night just 2 miles to the east of our location.

The wolves need to be treated, and hunted, with open seasons just like coyotes or any other rapidly producing varmint.

Thanks for your post.
