Re: Backcountry BC & Beyond Testimonials

by Sara Brandenburg on Fri Jun 11, 2010 03:52 PM

Hi, I am Sara Brandenburg. I am fifteen years old, and I have completed my first sheep hunt with Dustin, and I am going on another adventure with him in nine days, for my Desert Sheep in Mexico.

I am on a quest for my North American Grand Slam. I got my Dall Sheep in Alaska this September with another outfitter, and I picked Dustin to be my guide for my Big Horn Sheep. Our next hunt is in January for my Desert Sheep, and our fourth and final hunt will be in August, for my Stone Sheep. Dustin will be my guide of choice for these three hunts.

Dustin, Kent, Dad, and I were on a adventure for a Rocky Mountain Big Horn in British Columbia. It was a ten day backpack hunt, in October. While we were hiking into camp, Dustin kept me entertained and encouraged all the way! The next morning we awoke to fog, and to our dismay it was foggy for the next three straight days. But that did not stop Dustin!

He kept looking for signs of sunshine, and sheep. In the meantime, he told me stories and kept my spirits high. At the very end of the fourth day, we spotted three rams, and decided no matter what, we were going after them! Early on the fifth day, we went after those rams, to see if one was legal in size. The entire way Dustin kept me motivated; he taught me to never give up, and to always push myself. Well, I am sure glad that he did, my reward was a full curl ram!

Dustin is a terrific guide, and I highly, highly recommend him! He is one of those people when you first meet him, you can't help but to like him. He's a good guide because he tends to all of your needs. He really does care about all of your necessities. He's tough, knowledgeable, determined, patient, caring, devoted, and most importantly, he's awesome! Dustin helped me not to get discouraged by the weather, and things that were out of our control. We were well prepared for our hunt, thanks to Dustin's organization.

Not only were we well prepared, but Dustin took some outstanding photographs of my hunt, and up-close video of my shot as well! 100% AWESOME! That's why I've chosen Dustin to guide my next 2 hunts! Good times, man!

We met Dustin Roe in May, 2007. He assisted with taking two huge grizzly bears. A dad-daughter combination in which our daughter, Katey shot a record book grizzly 24 5/8 inch skull. Dustin convinced me to hunt bighorn sheep with him later that year. He got the buckle for the largest sheep taken in British Columbia that year. A beautiful 177 ram. What followed was a super-human effort on Dustin's part. His pack was heavier than his own body weight. My pack was stuffed too, and we had 9 1/2 miles to hike out. No trail, deadfalls, cliffs, swamps, but we had a heck of a ram, and we each had a big smile. We sheep hunters are a strange bunch. Dustin has incredible eyes, and he is tenacious. He is small in stature but huge in heart, and ability. I have recommended him to other hunters on numerous occasions and he has always delivered. He has a knack for finding animals and in our situation, he has a knack for finding record book animals. Our 15 year old daughter recently took a dandy bighorn ram in October 2009. Dustin has organized and will participate in three out of the four sheep hunts for Sara Rose to obtain her Grand Slam. Dustin will help her become the youngest woman in the world to get her Grand Slam. He enjoys what he is doing, and he is good at it.

"As a Television Show Host on Outdoor Channel, I have been afforded the opportunity to hunt with a variety of Mountain Guides across the US and Canada. Without exception, Dustin Roe is the most motivated, hard working and talented guide I've ever hunted with! He understands what it takes to get the job done under extreme conditions. I would be confident in Dustin's guiding abilities no matter what species of animal I chose to pursue!"

Don’t let Dustin’s small stature fool you. Pound for pound, I guarantee you he is one of the toughest and hardest working guides in the business. I have hunted with Dustin many times and look forward to the opportunity to hunt some different areas and species with him in the near future. You won’t find another guide who wants his clients to succeed more than Dustin Roe!

Just wanted to drop you a line and tell you how much I enjoyed hunting with you. One of my greatest fears when going on a guided hunt is my fear of ending up assigned to a guide that I don’t like, or one that is not willing to hunt hard with me. Five minutes after meeting you I knew I was with the right guide. From the moment we stepped off the charter flight your positive attitude grabbed me and made me feel comfortable. I just knew we were going to get our chance if we stayed with you and listened to your directions.
Your attention to detail, enthusiasm, and determination, along with your positive personality, helped us have a great hunt. I never saw in your face, or in the way you acted, one ounce of negativity. It seemed you were always saying, “We’ll go up this canyon and there will be a huge bull there for you.” Or, “Let’s build a fire and dry out and then we’ll kill our bull”. Every time we stopped and took a break you were glassing, looking, hoping to find that big bull. You never gave up and in the end you made it all happen!
Part of the fun of going on a hunt like this is all the planning that has to take place. I know we called you, emailed you, and just plain bothered you more than most hunters, but you never seemed to mind, in fact you encouraged the questions and made it fun to communicate with you. This actually added to the excitement of the hunt. We simply couldn’t wait to leave on the hunt and meet you.
I have to tell you I was at first worried about your age. I couldn’t understand how a guide so young could handle us “mature” guys, but you certainly did. I have always felt I could keep up with most guys and prided myself in being able to walk, climb, and hunt with the best of them. Well, I’m here to say you can walk and hunt me into the ground. The good thing is you never did. You set the pace on my terms without having to stop and ask me and I appreciated that. After a couple days I knew you could walk me into the ground if you wanted to, but you never made me feel uncomfortable.
I think the best part of hunting with you is your personality. You were just plain fun to be with. To me the hunt isn’t just about killing an animal, it is about the experience you have. Do you enjoy the people you are with, are you laughing, eating well, seeing pretty country, just having fun. With you from the very beginning we were like old friends. Even today at least once a day I use your line, “toughen up cupcake” and it makes me laugh. These are memories that last a lifetime.
Last but certainly not least, you took us to an area with tons of quality animals and gave Joe and I the chance to harvest great bulls. This was because of you, your research, and advanced scouting. This all goes into the making of a great hunt. You made a great hunt for us, and for that we are indebted to you.
In the future, should you need to use my name for a reference please feel free to do so, it would be my privilege to speak to anyone about you and your operation, we are after all now friends!!!!

After hosting the "Explorers Big Game Journal” television program for the past 6 years I have had the opportunity to hunt with a pile of outfitters and their guides. I really do my homework and almost all of them have turned out great.
However every once in a while you come across one who is a cut above the rest and that one is Dustin Roe. I had the pleasure of hunting Stone Sheep with Dustin and what a professional he turned out to be. Out of all the outstanding qualities as a guide he possessed I found that his desire for his client to harvest a truly spectacular animal out weighed them all.
From the minute we got off the plane Dustin was consumed with making sure that we were successful. Whether it was insisting we spent enough time glassing an area or pushing us to our limit to insure we made it to the top of a ridge for a better look he never missed a beat.
It is my recommendation that if you are looking for someone to hunt with that will give it all he's got to see that you hang a trophy on your wall then take it from me, a guy who hunts for a living, you better make sure you book a hunt with Dustin.

I had the opportunity to hunt Stone Sheep with Dustin Roe completing my first Grand Slam. Although the hunt was difficult due to some tough weather and a tight time schedule, Dustin worked extra hard and remained positive despite all the adversity we encountered. Dustin is a guide that is wise beyond his years and he has an incredible positive “can do” attitude that is invaluable on any mountain hunt. I would highly recommend hunting with Dustin for any species and I very much look forward to our next hunt together.
