About Coues Deer: The Coues Deer is a subspecies of the Whitetail Deer. It’s also one of the smallest deer in America. Coues deer stand around 28-32 inches tall at the shoulder and measure about 56 inches from head to tail. A large field-dressed buck will rarely exceed 80-90 lbs.

The Coues deer varies in color from grayish coat in winter to a more reddish-brown color in the summer. They inhabit Arizona, New Mexico, and portions of Sonora Mexico and Chihuahua Mexico, and southeastern California. [Wiki]

The Coues Whitetail (properly pronounced "cows", but almost everyone pronounces it "coos") is a small subspecies of whitetail deer found in Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico. This deer has developed such a reputation for being able to vanish from view in the smallest amount of cover that it is frequently referred to as the "Grey Ghost". Many people consider Coues deer to be the most challenging big game animal to hunt. Some even refer to hunting Coues deer as the "poor man's sheep hunt" because of the harsh terrain involved. Famous big-game hunter Jack O'Connor proclaimed the Coues deer to be "the most difficult of all deer to kill" due to its extreme wariness and the inhospitable habitat this deer can live in.

The Coues deer (Odocoileus virginianus couesi) is one of the smallest deer in America. Coues deer stand around 28-32 inches tall at the shoulder and measure about 56 inches (1426 mm) from head to tail. A large field-dressed buck will rarely exceed 80-90 lbs. (although some can exceed 100 pounds) and a doe tends to weigh about 65 lbs. Hoffmeister (1986) reported the average weight of 7 males from the Chiricahua Mtns. in Arizona as 83.5 lbs (37.65 kg); of 19 females as 67.3 lbs. (30.53 kg). Raught (1967) reported that bucks in New Mexico averaged 85-90 lbs (39-41 kg) and females averaged 65 lbs. (29 kg). In contrast, a good-sized field-dressed Eastern Whitetail buck will weigh approximately 200 lbs. (90.91 kg).

The Coues deer varies in color from a grayish coat in winter to a more reddish-brown color in the summer. Fawns are born with numerous white spots on their coat. Those spots generally disappear after about 2 months. Coues deer have the classic white circles around its muzzle and eyes seen on other subspecies of whitetail. However, Coues tend not to have such a pronounced white throat patch as do whitetail in the East and to the North. The tail of the Coues deer is generally brown with a border of white on the topside and completely white on the underside. This is in contrast to a mule deer which has white on the topside of the tail. Tail color can vary geographically. The topside of a Coues tail can be grayish, reddish brown, or black.

I have hunted with Ward's Outfitters for Coues deer three(3) times in the past and have signed up for another hunt in January, 2008. Each time I have taken a buck - difficult to do as a bowhunter with Coues deer - I have found Steven to be great to deal with, he is in a game rich area, he understands bowhunters because he is one himself, the accommodations are good - and he puts me on the animals that I am interested in. I could not ask for more from an outfitter - and will continue to hunt with him and his guides.

My hunt with Wards Outfitters was one of those I replay in my mind over and over. The number and quality of animals was outstanding and you could not find a better more dedicated group of guides. I can’t wait to go back and try to top my 92” Coues Buck.

Having hunted multiple states with many outfitters there's a reason I returned to Wards. Quality & quantity of bucks is unreal. Two deer in two trips and one was in my lap at 8 steps. A great hunt with great people.

I hunted several years ago with Steven Ward on an Arizona December coues whitetail deer hunt and was very pleased with his performance. I shot a 101 inch buck that Steven glassed up on the second afternoon of the hunt. Steven knows how to hunt hard and has a knack for locating big bucks. He more than met my expectations and I would hunt with him again in a heart beat! He's the real deal, just look at his track record. I would strongly recommend his services.

About Nichols Guiding Service

If you are looking for a quality hunting experience in the state of Arizona, then you have come to the right place. Nichols Guiding Service is a full time, year round outfitting and guiding service in the state of Arizona. We offer fully outfitted and guided big game hunts for Elk, Mountain Lion, Coues Deer and Bear. We are dedicated to giving you 100% to make your hunt not only successful, but also enjoyable and memorable.

Elk: Arizona Elk hunting is a spectacular event. Although it is extremely difficult to draw a tag, you can be sure the wait is well worth it, for you will be in for a truly unforgettable hunting experience.

Mountain Lion: The mountain lion is a magnificent trophy but an extremely elusive one, requiring the aid of well trained hounds. We specialize in hunting lions on dry ground without any need for snow. We have an excellent string of riding and packing mules that we use to travel the canyons, bluffs and ridges while looking for lion tracks.

Coues Deer: The coues deer has become an extremely desired trophy animal. Arizona has great habitat for these deer and as a result very high numbers of them. We hunt these deer in the months of October, November and December.

Bear: Arizona has excellent bear hunting, with the true potential of harvesting a world class animal. Bears in this state come in many color phases: Black, Chocolate, Cinnamon and Blonde. We hunt these bears in the months of August and September, when the food sources are plentiful.

Nichols Guiding Service is a full time year round outfitting and guiding service in the state of Arizona. We are family owned and operated. We are fully licensed, insured and permitted to guide on over 11 million acres throughout the state. We are very fortunate to have a crew of guides that are highly qualified and are dedicated to giving each and every hunter the best chance of a successful hunt. All of our guides are family and friends who are devoted in helping every one in camp be successful and ensuring that the hunt is enjoyable and memorable.

Visit our site to purchase our two hunting DVD's. On this DVD we will be in search of the monster Bulls that Arizona has become so well known for. We will hunt Bulls starting in September, when the mountains are alive with the sound of bugeling and the rustling of falling leaves; through December, where the Bulls have retreated to the canyons and thickets to pass away the winter. This DVD has 9 exciting hunts: 3 Archery, 2 Muzzleload, and 4 Rifle. With most of the bulls scoring over 350 and several that go from 380+ to a huge typical archery bull at 411 official.

We understand the importance of relying on your outfitter. We want to make sure that at the end of your hunt, you are confident that you have made the right decision. We look forward to each new season and hope to have you in camp!

I've experienced some great guided hunts, from arctic caribou to South African plains game, but my 2007 mountain lion hunt with Nichols Guiding Service ranks up there with the best in overall enjoyment and value. Jarred's family and friends did everything possible to ensure I had a good time and a good hunt. His well trained hounds and sure footed mules, combined with his passion for the outdoors, helped ensure our success. His hunting DVD's clearly illustrate the experience you could expect on a hunt with him. I highly recommend Nichols Guiding Service.

"I have hunted with the Nichols family many times over the years. They are committed to each hunter and strive to please in all areas of the experience. They have a natural ability to find trophy animals of all species. Their mountain lion hunts are fantastic! They invest in the very best equipment and livestock to give the hunter the best chance of taking home a trophy tom. Jarred's hounds are some of the best dry-ground hounds I've ever hunted behind. This is a fun back-up hunt if you don't draw that special tag you've been waiting to get in the mail.....And.... it's a bonus hunt if you do! Give Jarred a call and make room on the wall! Good luck hunting! John May Tucson, AZ
