Information about Elk Hunting

OUTDOORSMAN features the Top elk hunting guides, elk hunting outfitters, and elk hunting lodges in the United States and Canada offering Trophy Elk hunts. Our listed Elk hunting guides, elk hunting outfitters, and elk hunting lodges are some of the best in the industry and are proven professionals that offer World Class Trophy Elk hunts.

About Elk Hunting: Elk are the second largest species of deer in the world and one of the largest mammals in North America and eastern Asia. Elk range in forest and forest-edge habitat.

Their high level of adaptability poses a threat to endemic species and ecosystems where they have been introduced. Male elk have large antlers which are shed each year, providing them with a means of defense. The elk bugle call is on of the most distinctive calls in nature.

Types of Elk

Elk hunting is one of the most popular hunting sports in the country today. There is something about listening to a large bull elk bugle from a mountainside at first light that makes a grown man's heart race and legs shake uncontrollably. Even though elk are large animals, they can be difficult to locate when hunting.

Elk can disappear into an aspen thicket in mere seconds or sneak up on hunters without breaking a twig.

Elk can be loud and easy to call in the rut.

There are 3 subspecies of elk:

Rocky Mountain Elk - Roosevelt Elk - Tule Elk

The Rocky Mountain Elk is the most widespread species of elk and are found west of the Mississippi River.

Rocky Mountain Elk: The most widespread species is the Rocky Mountain Elk or what many now call the American Elk. The American Elk live west of the Mississippi River. A bull American elk can weigh 800 pounds or more while a cow typically weighs 450 to 500 pounds. The largest herd of American elk lives in Colorado. That herd has over 300,000 animals in it. Western elk hunting is also popular in New Mexico, Arizona, and Idaho.

Rocky Mountain Elk were once found over most of the United States and southern Canada, but hunters have killed so many of them that they survive only in regions west of the Rocky Mountains. The largest herds live in Yellowstone Park, on Montana's Sun River, and in Washington's Olympic Mountains. They are also plentiful on most mountain ranges in Utah. American elk have also been transplanted to states east of the Mississippi River, including Arkansas, Kentucky, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. These states have small elk herds and allow elk hunting on a limited basis.

Roosevelt Elk: The Roosevelt Elk is the largest of all elk species. A mature bull can weigh up to 1,000 pounds where a mature cow can weigh up to 600 pounds. Roosevelt elk are found in Oregon and Washington but some inhabit northern California and British Columbia. The Roosevelt Elk is darker than the American elk and some say they are the toughest species to hunt because they often don't bugle as much as American elk. The terrain they live in can be extremely rugged and wet because many of them inhabit the rain forest located in Oregon.

The greatest difference between Roosevelt elk and Rocky Mountain elk is in their habits and distribution. Roosevelt elk choose to live in the rain forests of the Pacific coast. They prefer the logged and burned over areas of the coastal mountains and the western slope of the Cascades. Upon finding an area which meets their needs they spend their entire lives there. Huckleberry, trailing wild blackberry, vine maple, salal, and other shrubs are favorite food during the late summer, fall, and winter. Weeds and grasses are preferred in the spring and early summer.

Tulle Elk: The Tulle Elk can only be found in parts of central California. The Tulle Elk is smaller in size that the other species. An adult bull often tips the scales at 600 pounds or less while a cow typically weighs 300 to 350 pounds. The adult cows average 375-425 lbs (McCullough, 1969). The yearlings (spike bulls) average the same weight as the adult females. The coats are a light buffy beige with a darker brown long haired mane circling the necks of both the males and females. The calves are similar to regular deer calves, with a light brown spotted coat. All animals display a prominent white rump.

They average 7 feet in length and stand 4-5 feet in height at the shoulder. The male yearlings are also known as spikes, during their first year of antler growth they only have one antler that is very thin and spindly compared to the large six point racks that the dominant males demonstrate. The females do not have antlers and the males drop theirs annually which re-grow a little larger with more tines as the yearling ages.

The Tule Elk thrive in the moderate Mediterranean climate and subsequent vegetation type in its native range. The Tule Elk forage on annual grasses such as the red brome and cheatgrass, as well as the perennial forbs like, globe mallow, and wild licorice. In addition, alfalfa is also very important to the herd's diet.

Suggested Elk Hunting Equipment: .270 caliber minimum and good optics - spotting scope & binoculars

I have been on two deer/elk combo hunts with the crew at Weatheredhorn and I can honestly say these were the best guided hunts I`ve ever been on. Not only was I successful filling my tags with quality animals, it was the crew and the amenities that really made the trip truley enjoyable. The cabins are comfortable and heated, the shower rooms were clean, heated and had everything you needed. The food is outstanding! Dinners with full bird turkeys with all the trimmings to rib steaks to prime rib. Lunnches pretty much what ever you want. They will have a couple of different soups, several types of lunch meats & breads, mac salad, chips etc. But if there is something you particularly wanted just ask the cook. If he`s got it, he`ll make it. Breakfast followed suit. Eggs the way you want `em, fresh hot biscuts, pancakes and on & on! The staff, well.....NONE better! Not only are they what I`d call "Good `Ol Boys", they will do whatever it takes to make your hunt successful , enjoyable & Fun!

Can a cow elk hunt be a hunt of a life time. It can when hunt with Paul Moore. As an outfitter Paul is fantastic. Works very hard to make sure your hunt is everything you want. As a person, he is sincere and enjoys hunting and guiding. We felt welcomed the minute we stepped out of our car. The hunting was tough with deep snow and cold temps. Paul put us on elk every day. He allowed us to hunt the way we wanted(spot and stalk). It was a like a dream hunting in the mountains. My buddy shot his elk on the first day. I shot mine on the last. Every day was fun and truly enjoyable. The food was great. The other hunter in camp was a pleasure to hunt with, and he shot his first animal ever. It was a great experience!! W3 Outfitters will be seeing us for many years to come. Thanks again Paul for making this a very special hunt.

I had the pleasure of Elk Hunting with Paul Moore of W3 outfitters this past September of '07. Paul Moore and I were archery hunting by spot and stalking/calling. During the course of five days I saw over 40 Bull Elk. Paul called four Bulls in archery range for me. One bull came in and winded me, I missed a Pope & Young bull in a meadow by miss judging the distance, and on the fifth day of the hunt Pual put 10 bulls in front of me. Two of which I had in Bow range, one bull would not stop in a clear shooting lane and the other came screaming in and stopped 15 yards away quartering to me providing no shot.Paul Mooore provided me with an excellent hunt from the time I met him in Maybell until the day I left.THe accomodations were great and so was the company. If you are interested in a "traditional" horseback Elk hunt look no further than Paul Moore W3 Outfitters.-John OHara

My grandson and I went on an Elk Hunt last December, 2005 with W-3 Outfitters. Our season opened at 7 AM and by 8 AM we both had our Elk. Paul made sure that anything I might have needed was provided as I am disabled. I have had a Heart Attack, By-Pass Surgery, I have Sylicosis and am also a Diabetic. Paul does his homework regarding the migration of the Elk. He knows where they go each day and how to find them. He takes a range finder along to make sure you have a true and accurate yardage for your shot. The average shot is 300 yards. My wife also came with us even though she doesn't hunt and had a great time. I can highly recommend W-3 Outfitters for a premium guide service. Their success rate is the best I have ever encountered. In three days we saw over 300 Elk not to mention the Mule Deer and Antelope. Paul gave my grandson and I a hunting trip that will never be forgotten. Our memories are priceless. (Paul is one of the most honest men that I have ever encountered.)

I've hunted with Paul at W-3 for 10 years and have been successful 90% of the time. Paul cares about his hunters and strives to provide a quality experience each time. The area has one of the largest elk populations in the nation. The beauty of the area is worth the price of the hunt( high mountain meadows, streams, dark timber). Paul is a truthful person and won't tell you there's a 360 bull behind every tree. You won't be disappointed!

Paul took my wife and I into the mountains of Colorado for a wonderful time. The view was out of this world, the camp was very comfortable, the food was great and we experienced things that I have dreamed about since I was a young boy playing cowboy. Riding though the high mountain meadows enjoying the wild flowers and then there was elk everywhere, they were as surprised as us. We enjoyed this vacation as much as anything we have every done and we want to go back again. Thanks Paul for a great time.

Phoncon with Paul Moore of W3 Outfitters. Common sense, sincere, candid, and honest - the things that come to mind post conversation. We selected him as 'Outfitter of the Month' for May 2006. The selection was based on the amount and quality of voluntary client reviews on OUTDOORSMAN. W3 Outfitters feedback has been unquestionably positive, we have yet to see a negative response or unhappy client. It is clear that Pauls integrity and camp demeanor is as important to his clients as a successful hunt. Truly a “man’s-man”.

I have had the pleasure to bow hunt with Paul and Adam twice. I killed a pope and young bull in 2003 and had a great opportunity on a big bull in 2005. I have bow hunted the west many times, but I have never seen a many legal bulls as with W3 outfitters. W3's camps are well run and maintained. The food is great! Paul's horses are gentle and are well trained. The hunt is not as demanding as some mountain hunts due to the flat tops. You should expect to see mule deer, bear and lots of elk. You will have a great time and make a good friend .

hunted wth W3 Outfitters in Colorado for the past 7 years. I have hunted with this outfitter in both unit #12 as well as at Spear Head Ranch area units # 3,11 and 211. I have nothing but good things to say about this outfitter. His outfit gives 110% to the client. Nothing fancy about this outfitter...just a great hunting experience. Plenty of elk in his areas. It you are looking for a really good hunt, give them a call to book your hunt. You won't be sorry!

We have hunted with W3 for many years, and find that W3 is an exceptional outfit. We prefer the spike camp compared to the guided hunts, we'd rather do things for ourselves. Paul and Adam place their spike camps in prime elk country. We have shot elk in view of our camp and also up to a mile away. The camps have all you need, wall tent, wood stove, cots with pads, gas lanterns and stoves, and cut firewood. Someone - Paul, Adam, or a hand will check on you daily to see if you need anything. If you have an elk down, they'll pack it out to the base camp and even haul it to a processor if you like. We have hunted Montana, Wyoming and Colorado, and by far this is the best outfit we have come across.
