Information about Fly Fishing

Fly Fishing is a distinct and ancient angling method, most renowned as a method for catching trout and salmon, but employed today for a wide variety of species including pike, bass, panfish, and carp, as well as marine species, such as redfish, snook, tarpon, bonefish, and striped bass. There are many reports of fly fisherman taking quite unintended species such as chub, bream, and rudd while fishing for ‘main target’ species such as trout. There is a growing population of anglers whose aim is to catch as many different species as possible with the fly.

OUTDOORSMAN aims to present only the most reputable outfitters and guides, however, we recognize that there is always potential for personality conflicts and misunderstandings. Therefore, we recommend that you use the 'outfitter submittal' forms to discuss your needs & expectations then gather more information and make an informed decision.

About Camp Grayling

When the first explorers arrived in Northern Canada, they discovered an area unlike any other place in the world. Astounded by the abundance of water and wildlife, this area soon became known for its rich fishing and hunting. Centuries later, Camp Grayling continues to maintain the untouched and serene environment that makes Northern Saskatchewan an outdoor paradise.

As one of the longest running fishing camps in Northern Canada, Camp Grayling invites you to come and experience what Northern Saskatchewan has to offer. Located on Black Lake and just a short distance from the outflowing Fond du Lac River, Camp Grayling is recognized as a world class fishing spot for trophy Northern Pike, Walleye, Lake Trout and Arctic Grayling.

Pike, the best fishing action Camp Grayling has to offer. Our location provides exceptional pike fishing. Sandy lakes with numerous weed beds grow trophy northern pike to unbeatable sizes. Pike up to 54" in length (35 lbs) have been caught and released. We catch over 100 pike a year above 42". Other lodges cannot beat our pike population.

Walleye, can be found in most lakes in our area. Camp Grayling is on the northern limit for Walleye. The lakes further north are deeper and colder, and provide lake trout instead of walleye fishing. At Camp Grayling we are fortunate to have all four species on the same lake.

Arctic Grayling, are only a short walk from camp at the outflowing Fond du Lac River. These acrobatic fish are fun to catch.

Lake Trout, offer great fishing action. These fish can grow up to 50 lbs in size. The lake trout fishing is very good in June and September while they go deeper in the months of July and August.

We invite you to come and discover the phenomenal fishing, serene landscapes and superb hospitality that we have to offer. Join us at Camp Grayling for the experience of a lifetime!

We had an early spring in 2006. Weather was raining and then downright hot. But in our camp of 4 we took 2 - 19", 1 - 18" and 1 - 17" bear and were tagged out well before the week was up. The fishing was fantastic. Food, accomodations, travel, guides, equipment, etc., were all top notch. This was one of those 'total experience' hunts, with the hunting being only a part of the overall enjoyment. Highly recommended and I will be back.

Three Bars Pheasant Ranch - Cutthroat Trout

Three Bars Ranch is located a short walk from the St. Mary's River. The St. Mary is considered to be one of the finest dry fly fisheries in North America. You will enjoy wild west slope cutthroats from 14 to 20 inches and catch rates of 10 to 50 fish per day. As an added bonus, there is a good chance you will not see another angler during your float. The lack of angling pressure is due to the absence of roads along the length of the river. Fortunately, Three Bars Ranch controls over 7 miles of river, giving you exclusive access.
