About Absaroka-Beartooth Outfitters

Trout fishing in Montana is renowned. The streams, lakes and rivers to which ABO has access are among the most prolific and beautiful in the state. Our fishing waters and hunting areas are remote and therefore pristine. All ABO accesses are inhabited by a very healthy, native cutthroat trout population. You’ll fish in our clear streams, high country lakes and the forks of Hellroaring Creek. After a day of casting flies into these crystalline waters, you’ll declare you are in fishing heaven.

Our camp, located 8 miles north of Yellowstone National Park in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, is only accessible by horseback. You will ride through some of the most scenic country in America. The wildlife is abundant and diverse, the meadows lush with wildflowers. Many of our guests enjoy this part of their adventure as much as the fishing. Our guides will escort you every step of the way. You will find them knowledgeable, skilled and accommodating. Your mission will be to catch fish, have fun and enjoy what is justifiably called “God’s country.” Those who just want to relax, read, backpack, bird watch, photograph or paint will prove just as satisfied as the angler.

In camp accommodations consist of comfortable, roomy, carpeted, wall tents with wood stoves, cots with foam pads, a hot shower, a roaring campfire and delicious hearty meals prepared by our camp cook, Pat.

We recommend a five-day fishing excursion (one day in on horseback, three days fishing and one day on horseback out) so that you receive the best experience possible. However, we are willing to accommodate a client’s wishes. You might wish to arrive a day or two early in order to float the Yellowstone, Gallatin, Jefferson or Madison Rivers.

Availability is very limited for these backcountry trips from July through August, so book your trip early!

About Absaroka-Beartooth Outfitters

Montana is world famous for its big game hunting. Hunters from all over the world come here seeking elk, deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, black bear and moose. We are proud to say that we have been offering high quality, challenging hunts for over 40 years. Our hunts are in tough, rigorous country that is typical of the great hunting areas in North America. The game animals are plentiful but as wild as the wilderness in which they live. Hunts are conducted from both horseback and foot depending on the animal and terrain. We will hunt as hard as you choose to hunt. Hunters must draw for mountain goat and moose tags but deer and elk tags are guaranteed through ABO. Guaranteed bighorn sheep permits are available for our area.

The elk in our hunting regions are a resident and migratory herd. The area is rough and remote which allow the elk the years necessary to develop quality antlers. The landscape varies from large open meadows to lightly timbered south slopes and long benches. Hunting with Absaroka-Beartooth Outfitters (ABO) is especially great due to our early season elk and deer rifle hunts in the peak of bugling season. ABO accesses one of two areas in the state that offer early season rifle elk and deer hunts. Hunters are guaranteed elk and deer tags through ABO.

ABO is committed to providing you with a quality hunt. Our guides have hunted with us for many years. They are experienced outdoorsmen and know the area extremely well. You will find them accommodating and dedicated to providing you a great fair chase hunt. All our equipment is in very good condition and we have great horse and mule stock. We guide a limited number of hunters through this unspoiled wilderness and as a result the wildlife remains abundant and we maintain a high success rate for our hunters.

Fair chase hunting on private land is now available through Absaroka-Beartooth Outfitters. We offer a very limited number of hunters the opportunity to hunt elk, mule deer, white-tail deer, bear, mountain lion, upland birds and turkey in distinctive settings. You can choose to hunt on the picturesque Lazy E-L Ranch just outside Roscoe, Montana or along the meandering banks of the famous Milk River near Glasgow, Montana. Each of these elite locations proffers an abundance of game.

About Absaroka-Beartooth Outfitters

You need not be a hunter or angler to thoroughly enjoy an adventure in Montana. We offer hiking, sightseeing and photography trips into our remote backcountry area for a wide variety of clients. If you like you can just bring a few good books to read, relax and do nothing more than enjoy this beautiful country. Over the years we’ve even had artists join us to record their impressions of this very special place.

The adventure begins the morning of your departure for our main wilderness camp. The ABO staff will transport you through some of the most magnificent country in North America. (If some of this country looks familiar, perhaps it is that you have seen it on the big screen in A River Runs Through It, and The Horse Whisperer.)

Upon arrival at Independence Camp, you will meet your guides and wranglers who will pack your gear and introduce you to your horse. During the next four hours, the caravan will climb a 10,000 ft. pass and descend 2,800 ft. into a picturesque valley, the home of our base camp, Hellroaring (7,200 ft.).

At camp you may relax and refresh yourself in your wall tent whose comfort and coziness belies the fact that you are many miles from any permanent human habitation. That evening you will enjoy a wonderfully prepared meal with beverages of your choice, a roaring campfire to gather ’round and time to socialize and share the anticipation of the adventures to come.

A good night’s sleep followed by an early rising and a big breakfast prepared by our great cook will set you on the path for your true mission: hunting, fishing, or just enjoying what is justifiably called, “God’s Country”.

Regardless of your chosen activity, our guides will escort you every step of the way. We are confident that you will find the guides knowledgeable, skilled, and accommodating. Whether you seek the majestic elk or the wily cutthroat trout, the end of the day will afford you the satisfaction of time well spent in pursuit of your sporting dreams.
