About Chucao Lodge*

Located on the shore of the lake very close to where it empties into the Yelcho river, the Lodge is only 45 minutes from the airport at Chaitén.

This magic place was built by Gonzalo Cortés, an experienced fisherman and author of the book "Fly Fishing in Chilean Patagonia".

He is also the owner of the renowned Fly Shop located in Santiago, Chile. After a long search, Gonzalo decided that Lake Yelcho, including its rivers Futaleufú and Yelcho, was the most appropriate place for a fishing lodge.

Thus in 1997 he began to bring out his first groups of visitors, both from Chile and other countries, to fish in this unique part of Chile. Later on he decided to build his own lodge, which is how Chucao Lodge came into being.

Fishing, this is the most important part. Lake Yelcho is widely known as one of the great fishing destinations in Patagonia, Chile. The lake is famous for the spectacular rises of large trout to dragon flies that swarm the edges of the lake each summer. Some of the largest trout caught each year in Patagonia come from this area. Each day when you are fishing the lake, you will visit a new location. Most of the fishing on the lake is from outboard-powered, exceptionally stable aluminum boats that quickly take you to the prime fishing spots. Your experienced guide takes the oars to quietly position you to make the perfect cast of your fly to the giant trout that can await you there.

Since our lodge is located so close to the mouth of the Yelcho River, we use our own McKenzie style drift boats for floating. On the river, you will generally fish with dry flies for big browns and rainbows from mid-December through mid-March. Early and late in the season (or when the dry-fly action slows down) fishing streamers is a good choice. There are numerous wonderful pools on the river where you can cast tiny dries and nymphs to sighted fish. If you choose, when water conditions permit, there are numerous places to stop and wade.

Drifting the river can take the whole day, with a stop for lunch. Your guide becomes your personal chef and presents you with a delicious shore lunch. Our clients always enjoy the beautiful scenery of the glaciers on the mountains surrounding the river. Be prepared for an abundant selection of birds and other wildlife sights to experience.

We also regularly fish other rivers including the Futaleufu, the Green, the Maldito and even a small wading stream close by the lodge that has produced very well during certain times. Many of our guests have hooked and landed their largest trout on several of the smaller lakes that are in close driving distance of our lodge.

Most fishing on the rivers and lake is for browns and rainbows, and the surprise of having a really big trout hit your dry fly - and the battle that follows - is unforgettable.
