Testimonials
Thanks again Bruce and see you in January for the MLK group pig hunt. I'm looking for a big ass razor back this time. Take care and please ask Grady how he is coming along on the taxidermy of this beast. I'll be up for the pig hunt on 17-19 January.
So, on to the review.
We, my brother and I, arrived at about the time everyone was going home for the day, so things were a bit hectic. We did finally get greeted by our guide Bruce (more on him in a second) and settled in for the night. There was food in a crockpot for the hunters, along with an assortment of drinks, tea and water.
The next morning, we awoke, expecting to be in the woods before daybreak. The guides arrived around 7ish and cooked breakfast of eggs, sausage and can biscuits. We were, at this point, less than pleased, but did our minds change and change quickly! After breakfast, our guide took us to the first hunt. He opened and closed the gates for us and off we went up the side of a mountain. Did I mention there was snow on the ground? There was. For a S. Georgia flatlander, it was an experience!
We settled into an area and Bruce set off to find the elk for us, planning to return if he found it. While we waited, a herd of fallow deer came by and gave us a really nice view. Bruce returned, no elk, but suggested we go for the buffalo. Before we got to the buffalo, my brother shot a MONSTER fallow deer from about 120 yards, more on that in a second.
The buffalo were congregated near a hay stack, and were not at all skittish, but buffalo are curious animals by nature. We drew VERY close, less than 50 yards for our shots. They went down quickly and Bruce took care of all of the trophies, no help needed.
On our way to the buffalo, we caught another herd of fallow deer and there were several nice trophies to be seen. My brother chose one but could not get a shot, but I eyeballed another and he took it solidly with his rifle. Turned out to be one of the finer fallow deer on the property.
The next day, we went to a different area for our elk. I had my bow, my brother his rifle and after a short stalk, two elk on the ground! I did, out of respect, finish my elk with a .22 but not before arrows in the lungs and one in the spine. I do not like to see animals suffer. Again, Bruce handled 100% of the work. We did the shooting and that was all. Bruce handled everything for us.
Now, if you are the sort of hunter who wants to be 100% catered in every way feasible, this is the place for you. Alan and his staff, particularly Bruce, really do want to ensure that your experience is memorable and worth the money. I like field dressing game and getting my hands bloody, that is part of it to me. Your mileage may vary.
My guide, Bruce, I could write a book about him and how genuine he was. There was NOTHING he would not do for you and your hunt. He worked extremely hard for us from the guide, to the shot to the aftercare of the game. He is/was the BEST.
Now, if you do choose to go here, and I hope you do! Take a bow with you. You will see plenty of game. The trick is selecting the TROPHY and taking it with your bow. These animals, while in a fenced enclosure, are skittish and getting one with a bow, particularly a trophy, is tough but worth it.
Also, talk to Alan about a bundled hunt. He is very accomodating about meeting your price range so be upfront and honest with him. He is very genuine and honest as a businessman. You will be very pleased. I am going back for something else, but I will be doing it solo so I can have more a hand in the overall experience.
Be sure that you TIP your guide!
Not being familiar with the area and since we were hunting different animals, I requested a guide. Eric was the lucky guy who got to accompany me ( a non seasoned hunting girl). He drug me up and down the mountain side, through streams and fields all the while I was carrying my rifle WITHOUT a sling. After about 2 hours we went back to camp and he made me a country boy sling outta rope, thank god ! that thing was getting heavy. We had the best time all morning long and just as I was about to call it quites and head in for lunch we had spotted the Ram's we had been looking for all morning.
We made a great team I found the perfect tree to hide behind and rest the gun, he was an awesome spotter. He talked me through the entire kill process. Once the Ram got into place, I hit him right behind the shoulder. We waited for the other Ram's to leave (took much longer than I expected) and I put him down with another shot. Eric and I went and got the truck and brought my trophy back to camp. The following day my other half and I decided to hunt together as he bagged his wild boar that afternoon. We went out hunting the only blackbuck antelope left on the property. We found him with some HUGE Red Stag deer and the Elk. I spotted for him and we took the blackbuck down as well. Everything was processed immediately. We left the 3 heads to be mounted by Alan's brother Grady (Master Taxidermist).
All in all this was an amazing time. We also made some new friends, who we look forward to hunting with.
