Ground Squirrel Hunting - Gopher Hunts with Alpine Outfitters, Alberta Hunting Guides & Outfitters.

Our high volume gopher hunts are done in the month of June as the pups are emerging from their dens and the grass is still short. With thousands of acres and thousands of gophers you can expect to shoot thousands of rounds ammo during your hunt. With our shooting wagon you can expect a comfortable and steady rest as you shoot, most shots are in the range of 10 feet to 200 yards +. With the high volume shooting we do, accurate 22's or 17's rimfire’s are the caliber of choice, There low recoil, cheap ammo, and low noise levels make them just right. We recommend the 17 Mach 2 as the best rimfire cartridge, Its low noise flat trajectory and economical price is exactly right for the Ground Squirrels of Alberta.

Richardsons Ground Squirrels are a burrowing animal that spends its winters in hibernation and its summers eating the grass and crops from the farms and ranches. They are about 4 ½ to 8 inches tall and 2 or 3 inches thick, not much bigger than a can of pop. With a good rifle you will be amazed at your improved accuracy, after a day of shooting hundreds of rounds at ranges up to 200 yards.

Hunters stay in a furnished Farmhouse located near the hunting area with meals and bedding provided. We can also provide rifles for rent and extra ammo will be on hand. Day’s start with a good breakfast on the farm then we drive out to the land selected for hunting that day. Gophers will come up most days around 9 am and stay up until 6pm, lunch will be in the field.

With the large numbers of gophers it is important that you bring extra magazines for your rifle at least 4 is best. Your guide will be busy spotting gophers for you as well as reloading magazines.

Prairie dog hunts on the Ingomar ranch are like none other. Prairie Dog towns can range in size from a few acres to over 1 square mile. It is unknown just how many prairie dog towns exist on the ranch. One guess is well over a combined 10 square miles of prairie dog towns, however each year existing prairie dog towns grow, new towns appear, and old ones are discovered. One thing you can always count on is wondering whether or not you brought enough shells.

Located in eastern Montana, the Ingomar ranch is host to one of the most impressive Prairie Dog populations in the country. There are several hundred Prairie Dog towns that are permanent residents on the 250,000 acre ranch. The size of the ranch also allows us to better manage prairie dog hunting pressure throughout the season by rotating prairie dog hunting areas between groups. We will never schedule prairie dog hunts back to back for any particular area.

Depending on the size of your group you can expect your prairie dog hunting area to be anywhere from 4,000-12,000 acres. You'll be the only ones assigned to your area so you won't have to worry about competing for Prairie Dogs with anyone else. Because of the size of the ranch it also covers a wide variety of terrain from steep cliffs and buttes, to rolling hills and prairie, to winding coulee’s and river bottoms. However no matter where you may be on the ranch you will never be too far from one of the 100+ Prairie Dog towns.

Prairie Dog Hunts are conducted primarily during the months of May, June, July and August. We have hunts available in both Texas & South Dakota. South Dakota Prairie Dog Hunting is conducted 30 miles south east of Pierre, SD. The weather is usually much cooler. The pups show up around March and we begin hunting in May. The hunt is conducted on several large ranches. The hunters are stationed at one point and sit either in shooting benches or our high rack hunting truck. The hunts are fast paced and require lots of ammo! We suggest bringing at least 200 rounds per day for shooting. You can practice your hunting skills during the off season.
