Registered Maine Master Hunting Guide Todd Jackson has been sea duck hunting and fishing the Maine Coast all his life. I started fishing at age 5 and Hunting with my dad at age 10. I have owned and operated Penobscot Bay Outfitters since 1992. I am a licensed US Coast Guard Captain and a commercial boat operator.

We will be set up for sea duck hunts at the opening of legal shooting time to sunrise. This will give us the chance at seeing the morning flights of Sea Ducks and Puddle Ducks. After the morning Maine Sea Duck Hunts we often go right to Maine Puddle Duck Hunting or Maine Sea Duck Hunting if the hunters would like to hunt for Black Ducks, Goldeneyes, or some of the other diving Ducks Maine has to offer.

Sea Duck hunts usually begins October 1st and lasts through mid January with seven sea ducks per day limits. Puddle duck hunting is usually a 50 to 60 day split season with a four or five bird limit.

Our sea duck hunts are from the Seaworthy 17 and 21 foot TDB duck boats. Hunting and traveling in one boat eliminates dangerous ocean transfers or transfers to slippery ledges and rocks. With these boots we don’t have to worry about the rise and fall of the tide like ledge hunting outfitters do. Our sea duck hunting boat rides to the hunting areas are only about 5 to 10 minutes not an hour or two like others. These boats allow for easy pickup of the decoys to move to another area if for some reason an area does not produce. This and liberal duck limits will make this a waterfowling experience like no other. Our boats are kept in top shape with new motors, radios, GPS and safety equipment.

Maine has a strong nesting population of Eiders along with thousands of migrants. There are three species of Scoters: the whitewing. Black and Surf, also large flights of Oldsquaws. For puddle ducks we have blacks, mallards, two species of Goldeneyes, Buffleheads, Hooded, Red Breasted and American Mergansers. These are the most common for Maine Duck Hunting. We also see Scaup, Ringnecks, Canadian geese, King Eiders and Pintails.

Let me tell you about myself and my company Sugarwings Outfitters. My name is Mark Mosher I have lived in Maine all my life. My hunting experiences started when I was a very young child, when my three brothers, two sisters and I started hunting with my father. My father has been a granddad to the Maine woods all his life. I have always loved to hunt, as do the rest of my family and all my friends in the Maine Woods. We have always considered it a way of life. This way of life, I wanted to share with others, and the best way was to receive my Maine Duck Hunting Guide and Coast Guard License nineteen years ago. I guide for Grouse, and Woodcock which begins in October and then Sea Duck hunts and Puddle Duck hunting that begins in October through the end of December. We use” big rig”, long line sea duck hunting decoy sets with either layout boats or one of our custom sea duck hunting boats. You’ll see lots of action with the fast moving scoters and long tails “comin in”. Bring lots of ammo! Our Maryland sea duck hunting guides each have their own way of big rigging their sea duck hunting long line sets but when you see them start to flag and hear them call out, “Get Ready…TAKE EM” swing fast and get waaay out in front of the birds!

Black Duck Outfitters Maryland guided Sea Duck hunts are in the famous Chesapeake Bay. We will be sea duck hunting from either 19-24 foot custom duck boats or out of layout boats. The types of sea ducks and diver ducks that we will be hunting are: Surf Scoter, Common Scoter, White Wing Scoter, Long Tail Duck “Old Squaw”, Bufflehead & Blue Bill

The action is fast as the sea ducks are moving up and down the bay just inches above the water! Your sea duck hunting guides will be using” long line rigs” with LOTS of sea duck hunting decoys. We are shooting DECOYING birds. Not the 50 yard shot at passing flocks! Bring lots of shells as sea duck hunting will test you shooting ability!! Fast Birds and the boat moving up and down with the waves equals a fun time!!
