About Chucao Lodge

If you want a trout fishing experience where you are literally located on the shore of the lake which is very close to the where it pours into the Yelcho river your at the right place. Our trout fishing lodge is only a short distance from Chaitén our local airport.

This place was inspired by Gonzalo Cortés, the author of "Fly Fishing in Chilean Patagonia". His love of trout fishing also inspired the renowned Fly Shop located in Santiago, Chile.

Gonzalo has been inviting visitors and trout fishing enthusiast to this part of Chile since 1997. Lake Yelcho has become worldly known as some of the best trout fishing in Patagonia. This remote location has supplied some of the largest trout ever caught in this area. There are so many great fishing holes that when on your trout fishing trip you will be guided to different areas each day. You will be whisked to each location by out-board powered fishing boats. Your guide has exceptional instincts and can properly place you in the perfect fishing hole to guarantee success.

We are very fortunate our trout fishing location is so close to the Yelcho River, the mouth of this magic river is fished with McKenzie style boats for drifting. Trout fishing this river is best fished with dry flies from mid December to mid March. Late season trout fishing is best fished with streamers when the dry fly action slows down. With so many pools casting dries and nymphs reward many trout fisherman with an action packed experience. There are also plenty of places to wade in if you choose as long as the water permits.

If you love a full day trout fishing, then drifting the river with only a short break for lunch can be your dream come true. You will be able to experience an abundant display of scenery and wildlife.

We not only fish the Yelco River, but have a supply of small wading streams and other lakes and rivers just waiting for your cast. Many of our trout fishing patrons have actually landed their largest catches from these small off the beaten path, ponds. All these areas are within a short driving distance from the lodge.
